How to find a HYROX doubles partner, and what to agree on first

Most people who want to race doubles have a partner problem, not a fitness problem. Here is how pairs actually form, and the short conversation that turns a maybe into a race entry.

Where partners come from

Your gym, first. Someone who trains at the same time as you and has mentioned HYROX twice. Then the Instagram and Facebook groups for your city or race, where posts read like classifieds and half go unanswered. Then race-day chance, when a solo entry meets another solo entry at the check-in tent.

And then the option built for exactly this: ROXMATCH shows you athletes who have picked the same race as you, in a division you can race together, sorted by how close your goal times are. It is how Fabienne and I found each other.

Check compatibility before the station split

The first conversation is not about who takes the sled. It is about whether you are a match for the race at all.

The first thing wasn't really "who does which rep", it was more whether we were actually compatible for the race. Same division, similar expectations, realistic target, that kind of thing. Once that part makes sense, then you can figure out the station split around your strengths.

The five things to agree on

Train together at least once

You do not need to live in the same city, but you need one session where you run the handovers for real. The stations are individually simple; the swaps are where a pair gets slow.

We definitely trained together before Athens. I would not recommend meeting your doubles partner for the first time on race day unless chaos is part of your race strategy.

If you already have someone in mind

Ask them. This week.

Worst case they say no. That's still better than spending three weeks wondering whether they'd race with you and never actually asking. That's basically the problem ROXMATCH is trying to solve as well: finding someone who actually wants the same race as you.

Questions athletes ask

Do we need to be the same level?

Close, not identical. A shared goal time you can both hold matters more than matching fitness tests. Doubles lets the stronger partner take more of the heavy work.

Can I find a doubles partner in another city?

Yes. Pairs on ROXMATCH often train apart and meet for one session before the race. Pick a partner by race and goal time, not by postcode.

When should we start looking?

As soon as you have a race in mind. Entries sell out, and you want the partner before the entry, not after.
