Doubles guide
Training for doubles when your partner lives in another city
Plenty of doubles pairs live hours apart. That works, as long as you train for the same race instead of two different ones.
Agree on the race before the plan
Same event, same division, one goal time you both say out loud. Everything else follows from that number: how fast the runs have to be, how much each of you takes at the stations, how hard the last month gets.
Run the same benchmarks
Pick two or three workouts you both repeat every few weeks, wherever you are. Something with 1 km runs under fatigue, something with wall balls, something with a sled or lunges if your gym has them. Share the numbers. You learn who is faster where, and that is your station split taking shape before you ever train together.
Train the pace of the pair
You will run every kilometer together on race day, at the pace of the slower partner. So the faster runner should practice running at that pace under fatigue, and the slower runner should push the runs most. That one change makes a remote pair much faster together.
A weekly check-in
- What we did: sessions, how they felt, any niggles.
- What changed: a new benchmark, a missed week, a sore knee. Better said early than on the start line.
- What is next: the next shared benchmark and the date of your next session together.
Do not skip the in-person session
At least once before race day, ideally twice, train together. Run through the stations in race order, practice every swap and handover, and run the kilometers side by side at race pace. The handovers are the part you cannot rehearse alone.
Or find someone closer
If you would rather train together every week, switch on "Open to train together" in your ROXMATCH profile. The chip shows on your card, so athletes near you see it when they swipe.
Questions athletes ask
Can you train for HYROX doubles without training together?
Mostly, yes. Run shared benchmarks, check in weekly and meet at least once before race day to rehearse the swaps and handovers.
How often should doubles partners train together?
As often as you can, but at least once or twice before race day, running the full race order with your planned swaps.
Who sets the running pace in doubles?
The slower partner on the day. You run every kilometer together, so the faster partner should practice running at that pace.
Can ROXMATCH help me find a training partner nearby?
Yes. Turn on "Open to train together" in your profile, and the chip shows on your card for athletes near you.
